Our mashup Geo Talk has been updated. It lets you create forums (discussions) linked to the particular place on the map. Cloud forums on the map.

Just mark a place, type a question (suggestion, information etc.) – in other words create an initiation for the discussion and get unique link for the map with embedded forum. After that you can share this link with your partners/colleges, print in your blog / twitter etc. – it depends on your own decision only – who you want to see among readers. And after that you can just follow to the discussion.

No registration required. Technically it is Google Maps + cloud forums from Disqus.

You can discuss some geo points, POI’s (points of interests – shops, bars etc.) or, for example, create a private forum devoted so some meeting in the selected place.

Any discussion could be copied right to your mobile phone (HTML5 mobile web application) via QR-codes.

Initially mashup ( http://geotalk.linkstore.ru ) is trying to detect your location (as per W3C spec). If you know that forums should be created in some particular area just set additional parameters for the above-mentioned URL:

One pattern for JSP applications

A simple model that lets you execute (do not execute) some JSP code depends on the state of some external file – File monitor taglib. The idea is very simple – during the first execution tag saves last modified date for file in the application (or session) scope. So, during the subsequent calls we can execute some code depends on the current modification date for that file.

QRpon - customized check-ins

Our mashup QRpon has been updated

QRpon offers a specialized CMS (content management system) that lets any business create a special mobile web site. This web site lets users automatically, just after confirming the identity, post business-defined information on the Facebook's wall. In the exchange for this posting (action) mobile web site will show a confirmation for the benefits. E.g. coupon, discount info etc. In other words - anything that could be presented to the staff on the business side for claiming the benefits. How to present this mobile site for the potential users? It is where QR-codes help us. CMS lets businesses create mobile web site and an appropriate QR-code. Because it is mobile web (HTML5) application there is no need for downloading. Just scan QR-code and get URL opened.

Automatically, this approach obviously supports also physical check-ins. There is no way to mark you "at this location" being actually nearby (based on GPS location) or even far away (via API). QR-code should be scanned, and it is a physical action that could be performed on-site only.

So for the business this approach offered a mobile web site (sites – business can create more than one site, update them often etc.), presented on-site with QR-code sticker, that lets visitors exchange posting in the social network (e.g. Facebook’s wall) for some benefits. And all site's aspects (what is presented on the site, what should be posted to the social network, what should be presented as a confirmation) are defined by the businesses themselves. Another possible explanation – try to think about the current check-in system (e.g. Foursquare) and just replace the standard posting (notice) from Foursquare with your own text. Obviously your potential users do not need to download (install) mobile application and do not need to register in some new service (beyond their Facebook accounts). And another important difference from Foursquare (Facebook, Twitter etc.) check-ins – the need for the physical presence.

Our mashup Photos from Twitter has been updated. Lets you search photos from Twitter timeline. The newest version includes improved search algorithm and fixed sharing functionality.

Etag processing in Java

As per the HTTP protocol spec ETag is the "entity value for the requested variant".

ETags could be used in conjunction with the "If-None-Match" header in order to take advantage of the client's (browser's) cache. At the first step (first request) our server can generate ETag value for the requested resource and return in during the normal response. Browser will cache the response and the associated ETag value. During the sub-sequential requests browser will send that ETag value back to the server. Server will examine the ETag. As soon as it will be determined that the requested page hasn't changed since last time the same client requested it, server will send back a status code 304 (Not Modified) with an empty body. - see Etag filter from JSOS.

Our geo-browsing mashup ForumSquare has been updated. It is some kind of city-forums. Tips from Foursquare mashed up with cloud forums (from Disqus):

You can move map (walk in) from one tip to another, ask questions, see discussions, respond etc.

Right from the map you can see venue page in Foursquare as well search related data in Google blogs and Twitter (via search mashup Got)

In the latest version you can also copy any location you are interested in right to your mobile phone (via QR-code). Just click on the phone-icon near the POI name. QR-code lets you load a mobile map (from Geo Messages project) right to your mobile browser. You can simply bookmark it there for example.

JDBC performance

"When you have to deal with a large amount of data to be operated on mySQL databases, the performance can be dramatically improved using a few simple tweaks.

First of all you have to use Statement.addBatch/executeBatch instead of simple execute methods. For each added batch, the jdbc driver will store in local memory and when the executeBatch is invoked, all the batches are sent at once to the database. Open source cloud

Yahoo is developing an internal cloud-serving engine to boost its own productivity, and intends to release the code as an open source this year.

"We're committed to open-sourcing all of our cloud infrastructure, for the simple reason that we don't believe the cloud infrastructure is a competitive differentiator for us," says Todd Papaioannou, Yahoo's vice president of cloud architecture. "I have this question pop up from time to time, 'Is Yahoo ever going to move into the cloud?' And the answer is, 'No. We are the cloud.'" - from here.

Geo Messages project

Our Geo messages project has been updated. Lets you share location info on the peer to peer basic as a signature to the standard messages (email, SMS).

Lets us repeat here the main idea. It is obvious, that the question "where are you" is one of the most often asked during the communications. 600 billion text messages per year in the US ask "where are you?" – as per Location Business Summit 2010 data. A huge amount of mobile services is actually being built around this question so their main feature is user’s location exchange. In the most cases it is implemented as the ability for the mobile user (mobile phone owner) write down own location info in the some special place (special mobile application). But it means of course, that user must be registered in location-sharing service (e.g. download some special application). And what is even more important – everyone who needs this information must use the same service too.

Typically we have now two models for location sharing in services. At the first hand it is passive location monitoring and future access to the accumulated data trough some API. It is Google Latitude for example.
Possible problems are privacy - some third party tool is constantly monitoring my location and what is more important – saves it on the some external server as well as the shorted life time for handset’s battery.

Another popular model for location sharing are check-in procedures in the various forms. Check-in could be an active (e.g. Foursquare), when user directly sets his/her current location or passive (e.g. Twitter) when location info could be added to the current message (status). But here we can see not only privacy issue - all my friends/followers can see my location but also a noise issue – my location info could be actually interested only for the physical friends. For the majority of followers my location info (e.g. Foursquare status in Twitter time line) is just a noise.

Our idea of the signed geo messages service (geo mail, geo sms) based on the adding user’s location info to the standard messages like SMS or email. Just as a signature. So with this service for telling somebody "where I am" it would be just enough to send him/her a message. And your partner does not need to use any additional service in order to get information about your location. He/she will simply read SMS or email.

It is obviously peer to peer sharing and does not require any social network. Our location signature has got a form of the link to some mobile map with the marker at the shared location. And what is important here – the map itself has no information about the sender and recipient. That information exists only in the message itself. The map (marker) has no information about the creator for example. That is all about privacy.

There are several implementations for this approach: mobile web mashups (HTML5), mobile web widgets, Java Card applets for legacy phones, JME midlet for mobile Java phones as well as solutions for web applications.

Java servlets filter that lets you compress (gzip) output. Now with cache support - you can compress files only once for example (during the first request).

A new approach for advertising in social networks

Our project QRpon has been updated. It offers a new approach for advertising in the social networks.

Qrpon is a specialized CMS that lets any business create a mobile web site for delivering coupons, gifts, discounts etc. And mobile users will get benefits in exchange for posting business related data (business-defined info) in the social network.

For example, mobile site that offers some discount for a particular product. Mobile user enters web site, accepts an offer, confirms his/her Facebook ID and some business related data will be post on his/her wall. In exchange for this post user will get a confirmation screen that could be presented to the business staff as a confirmation for benefits claim.

No special registration, no downloaded applications. Just a mobile Internet. Any HTML5 browser (iPhone, Android, Samsung etc.).

And mobile site could be easily presented on-site with QR-code. It is also created by our CMS (here the name QRpon comes from).

So why business should deliver benefits in exchange for Foursquare checkin for example? Why do not create own "checkin" site and deliver benefits in exchange for posting business-defined data (not Foursquare-defined)?

Protected notes

Our mashup Protected notes has been updated. Lets you create and share (twitter, email, facebook) password protected text notes (remarks). The idea is to let you share private notes via the public sources. For example, update your Twitter status (public account) so the only selected readers will be able to read that. And authorized users can delete notes.

This new version supports HTTP API also. Now you can create the password protected text notes right from your applications via the simple HTTP request.
Also you can directly add to your dynamic pages links to this mashup with the pre-populated text (a-la 'share this', 'twit this' etc.). The format for the hyperlink is this:

Pay by social network posting

It is a new business model for QR-code usage. Lets us see for example check-in model in Foursquare. Users check-in, service writes this information into user’s timeline and business delivers some benefits for the customers. And check-in information is on the practice a link to the services itself rather that a link to the business. So why do not make this process more logical at the end of the day? Ask users to put business related info into his her time line/wall etc. and deliver back some benefits (coupons, discounts, gifts, some free stuff etc.). So business will deliver benefits for the links in the social networks.

It is exactly what our service QRpon is about. This service lets any business create a mobile site for publishing data in social networks in exchange for some confirmation (coupon, discount info etc.) The process of creating mobile site is simple. Just set some text information about your business/offering, set a text for publishing in the social network and text for the confirmation. QRpon service will create a mobile site as well as QR-code for it. You can test this site (process) using this QR-code. If everything is Ok, just print this QR-code and place it on your business site. This QR code presents a physical (on-site) checkin for the customers.

End user can scan QR-code right from his/her phone, open mobile web site andyou’re your info/offering. If user is agreed, he/she can login to social network (right from the mobile site, there is Facebook connect button). Site will automatically publish your data (see above) to user’s wall/time line and return back the confirmation screen. This screen (e.g. coupon) could be presented to the staff for getting benefits. In other words it is like QR-code for coupons – that is the where the name QRpon comes from.

You can treat this service as pay links in the physical words. Customer pays for benefits by placing business data in the own social graph. Customer will get the benefits; business will get the social networks marketing. And the process works without the intermediate broker (read- without the checkin/places services).

On the main page QRpon service you can see a test QR-code. You can scan it and see how does this process work. For the accepting you need to login with your Facebook ID.
And for your own action just click 'Create QRpon' link. Set service info(description), text for publishing and the confirmation. Mobile web site generated by the service works with any HTML5 browser, so you can use it from iPhone, Android, Samsung etc.
