On Search Services for Internet of Things

The Internet of Things (IoT) data services are designed to be available to other services and users by demand. In other words, in practice, the services should be available at any time and at any location. But the big question here is how the other parties become aware of existing services. Sure, for some use cases we could have a static map of available services. But of course, it does not cover all the possible IoT deployment scenarios. So, the search (discovery) should be one of the keys for Internet of Things. And we can see here the whole analogue with the Internet itself. But for Internet of things, we will face a lot of challenges for search services. For example, we will see a lot of resources (billions of devices), heterogeneity, dynamic nature of services, streaming data, etc. In this paper, we discuss existing approaches for implementing IoT search, as well as approaches for setting standards in this area. See our new paper here.

On Mobile Cloud Computing

Our new paper: On context-aware proxy in Mobile Cloud computing for emergency services

In this paper, we discuss a new model for context-aware computing in 5G networks in the context of emergency services. Our intention is to present a new model for mobile services (mobile web applications) that effectively harnesses the power of 5G networks. The true power of 5G networks is to enable applications that were previously not possible. In our model, we create a mirror (duplicate copy) for mobile sensing data and allow server-side processing effectively use context information during the processing. As a result, we propose a cloud-based context-aware proxy targeting proximity related applications and services.

On Mobile Crowdsensing

Our new paper: On Data Persistence Models for Mobile Crowdsensing Applications

In this paper, we discuss various models and solutions for saving data in crowdsensing applications. A mobile crowdsensing is a relatively new sensing paradigm based on the power of the crowd with the sensing capabilities of mobile devices, such as smartphones, wearable devices, cars with mobile equipment, etc. This conception (paradigm) becomes quite popular due to huge penetration of mobile devices equipped with multiple sensors. The conception enables to collect local information from individuals (they could be human persons or things) surrounding environment with the help of sensing features of the mobile devices. In our paper, we provide a review of the data persistence solutions (back-end systems, data stores, etc.) for mobile crowdsensing applications. The main goal of our research is to propose a software architecture for mobile crowdsensing in Smart City services. The deployment for such kind of applications in Russia has got some limitations due to legal restrictions also discussed in our paper.

On Interenet of Things Programming models

In this paper, we present the review of existing and proposed programming models for Internet of Things (IoT) applications. The requests by the economy and the development of computer technologies (e.g., cloud-based models) have led to an increase in large-scale projects in the IoT area. The large-scale IoT systems should be able to integrate diverse types of IoT devices and support big data analytics. And, of course, they should be developed and updated at a reasonable cost and within a reasonable time. Due to the complexity, scale, and diversity of IoT systems, programming for IoT applications is a great challenge. And this challenge requires programming models and development systems at all stages of development and for all aspects of IoT development. The first target for this review is a set of existing and future educational programs in information and communication technologies at universities, which, obviously, must somehow respond to the demands of the development of IoT systems.

Mobile Cloud for Smart Cities

This paper is devoted to mobile cloud services in Smart City projects. As per mobile cloud computing paradigm, the data processing and storage are moved from the mobile device to a cloud. In the same time, Smart City services typically contain a set of applications with data sharing options. Most of the services in Smart Cities are actually mashups combined data from several sources. This means that access to all available data is vital to the services. And the mobile cloud is vital because the mobile terminals are one of the main sources for data gathering. In our work, we discuss criteria for selecting mobile cloud services.

On Standards for Application Level Interfaces in SDN

In this paper, authors discuss application level interfaces for Software Defined Networks. While the Application Programming Interfaces for the interaction with the hardware are widely described in Software Defined Networks, the software interfaces for applications received far less attention. However, it is obvious that interfaces to software applications are very important. Actually, application level interfaces should be one of the main elements in Software Defined Networks. It is a core feature. In this article, we want to discuss the issues of standardization of software interfaces for applications in Software Defined Networks area. Nowadays, there are several examples of unified Application Program Interfaces in the telecommunications area. Is it possible to reuse this experience for Software Defined Networks or Software Defined Networks standards are radically different? This is the main question discussed in this paper.

On telecom services

Communication specialists around the world are facing the same problem: shifting from circuit switching to packet switching. Network paradigm shift means the transition from Signal System Seven (SS7) signaling to Internet Protocol (IP). SS7 is a set of protocol standards that controls signaling for the public switched telephone network, allowing mobile carriers around the world to pass information across their networks. The transition to IP assumes that the IP protocol will be the only means of communication between the transport layer and applications. Telecom services evaluation due to the transition from Time-division multiplexing network to IP are considered.

BLE guard

It is a side effect from our experiments with Bluetooth Low Energy tags. See our program BLE guard for Android. You can download it here: http://servletsuite.com/BLECop.apk

The idea of the app is in the continuous scanning (determining of accessibility) for tags and issuing alerts when some changes in the environment are detected. For example, a tag is gone. Or a new tag appears. During the first scan cycle, the app remembers the 'visible’ tags. If during the next consecutive scan any tag is missed, then the application activates the sound alarm and vibration. The typical use cases are:

  • You place the tag in your suitcase. If suitcase is “leaving” you – the phone will notify
  • Your tag is a bracelet (the collar of the animal). If the bearer of the bracelet moves away from the phone – the phone will notify
And so on.

Also, you can specify the phone number that will receive SMS notification with tag’s loss information. This can be used, for example, for such models: the phone is in the car and the scanner will remember the tags around on the parking slot. If your car gets taken away (evacuated), the phone sends an SMS to a specified number.

By default phone number is blank and application uses only beep and vibration.

On Physical Web Browser

In this paper, we present the Physical Web Browser project for web applications depending on the environment. At this moment, many of users all over the world visit websites using their mobile devices only. Any mobile device (e.g., smartphone) has sensors to capture the environmental information. This information (context) could be analyzed and used within the web applications. There are, at least, two models for using this information. Firstly, we can use context information for data gathering requests in a web application. In this case, the output depends on the context. It is the classical model for context-aware data retrieval. In the second model, we can use context-aware data for improving user experience (for changing and tuning user interfaces). In other words, we present a way for the adaptation of web applications depending on the environment.

On data sharing in education

Yousef Ibrahim Daradkeh, Mujahed ALdhaifallah, Dmitry Namiot "On Data Sharing in Educational Processes", International Journal of Emerging Technologies in Learning, vol. 11, no. 4, 2016, pp. 28-31

In this paper, we present one model for data sharing in educational classes. Typically, Learning Management Systems present data stores for keeping educational materials as well as the conversations between teachers and students. In our model, we propose a peer to peer data exchange via smartphones. With the high penetration of smartphones across students, the ability to support one-to-one communication with teachers could be a good add-on for the traditional learning support systems. This ability could be especially useful for on-demand organized classes, where the standard support is very costly.

Lock-free programming patterns

Namiot Dmitry. On lock-free programming patterns. WSEAS Transactions on Computers, 15:117–124, 2016.

Lock-free programming is a well-known technique for multithreaded programming. Lock-free programming is a way to share changing data among several threads without paying the cost of acquiring and releasing locks. On practice, parallel programming models must include scalable concurrent algorithms and patterns. Lock-free programming patterns play an important role in scalability. This paper is devoted to lockfree data structures and algorithms. Our task was to choose the data structures for the concurrent garbage collector. We aim to provide a survey of lock-free patterns and approaches, estimate the potential performance gain for lock-free solutions. By our opinion, the most challenging problem for concurrent programming is the coordination and data flow organizing, rather than relatively low-level data structures. So, as the most promising from the practical point of view lock-free programming pattern, we choose the framework based on the Software Transactional Memory.

The Physical Web

Our new paper in arxiv: Manfred Sneps-Sneppe, Dmitry Namiot "On Physical Web models"

The Physical Web is a generic term describes interconnection of physical objects and web. The Physical Web lets present physical objects in a web. There are different ways to do that and we will discuss them in our paper. Usually, the web presentation for a physical object could be implemented with the help of mobile devices. The basic idea behind the Physical Web is to navigate and control physical objects in the world surrounding mobile devices with the help of web technologies. Of course, there are different ways to identify and enumerate physical objects. In this paper, we describe the existing models as well as related challenges. In our analysis, we will target objects enumeration and navigation as well as data retrieving and programming for the Physical Web.

Network Proximity for Content Discovery

Our new paper: I. D. Yousef and D. Namiot, “Network proximity for content discovery,” International Journal of Interactive Mobile Technologies (iJIM), vol. 9, no. 4, pp. 42–48, 2015.

The paper describes our approach for using wireless sensors on mobile phones for delivering new data to mobile subscribers. We propose a new practical approach for social context-aware data retrieval based on mobile phones as a sensor concept. This approach uses Wi-Fi and Bluetooth modules located on mobile phones as sensors for getting proximity information that can open (discover) access to any user-generated content or content published in the social networks. A special mobile service (context-aware browser client for Android) can present that information to mobile subscribers. The potential use-cases for the proposed approach include all projects associated with hyper-local news data. For example, news services in Smart City projects, proximity marketing, indoor data delivery, etc.

Our new paper: M. Sneps-Sneppe and D. Namiot, “Metadata in sdn api for wsn,” in New Technologies, Mobility and Security (NTMS), 2015 7th International Conference on, pp. 1–5, IEEE Paris, France, 2015.

This paper discusses the system aspects of the development of applied programming interfaces in Software-Defined Networking (SDN). SDN is a prospect software enablement for Wireless Sensor Networks (WSN). So, application layer SDN API will be the main application API for WSN. Almost all existing SDN interfaces use so-called Representational State Transfer (REST) services as a basic model. This model is simple and straightforward for developers, but often does not support the information (metadata) necessary for programming automation. In this article, we cover the issues of representation of metadata in the SDN API.

On events recognition in optical sensing systems

Aleksey Fedorov, Maxim Anufriev, Andrey Zhirnov, Konstantin Stepanov, Evgeniy Nesterov, Dmitry Namiot, Valery Karasik, Alexey Pnev "Gaussian mixture model for events recognition in optical time-domain reflectometry based sensing systems"

The novel approach for recognition of particular classes of non-conventional events in signals from phase-sensitive optical time-domain reflectometry is proposed. The proposed algorithmic solution is based on the adaptive filtering for de-nosing of signals and Gaussian Mixture Model with the feature space formed by the cepstral coefficients for their clustering. We use experimentally measured signals from phase-sensitive optical time-domain reflectometry based sensing systems for evidence of the suggested algorithm. Our results show that two classes of events can be detected and distinguished between two classes with the probability being close to 0.9. Proposed algorithmic solution can be used in real-time distributed fiber optic sensing systems for control of protected areas.

Markov chain is based on a principle of “memorylessness”. In other words the next state of the process only depends on the previous state and not the sequence of states. This simple assumption makes the calculation of conditional probability easy and enables this algorithm to be applied in number of scenarios. In this article, we will restrict ourself to simple Markov chain. - from here

On Mobile Wireless Tags

Namiot D., Sneps-Sneppe M. On mobile wireless tags // Automatic Control and Computer Sciences. — 2015. — Vol. 49, no. 3. — P. 159–166.

The subject of the article refers to services of mobile networks related to a context. We are examining the questions of the development of mobile services employing wireless tags. In addition to this, a new model of usage (application) of Core Bluetooth devices is offered. In our model Bluetooth devices act as tags and are used for reference (binding) and the subsequent context-dependent determination of data available to mobile users. Mobile phones, as well as already existing devices with Bluetooth support, can be used as such dynamic tags. In this case a single mobile application is sufficient for coverage of all stages of the life cycle of contextual services. The application provides a presentation of a tag (tags) and the binding of informational content to these tags, as well as the viewing of data bound to other tags. The possible application fields are applications for retail and service organizations and context-dependent services for Smart Cities. DOI

Memory leaks in JavaScript

Our new paper: Evgeniy Ilyushin, Dmitry Namiot "On JavaScript Memory Leaks". International Journal of Open Information Technologies 3.7 (2015): 27-31.

As soon as more and more the modern applications are deployed on the web, JavaScript has become a mainstream programming environment. JavaScript applications nowadays are big programming systems. We can mention here web portals, online games, graphics, media management, and even data science. Of course, the memory management is a very important problem, especially, for the dynamic programming languages. In this paper, we provide a survey of memory leaks patterns in JavaScript.

Network Proximity in Web Applications

Our new paper: Dmitry Namiot, Manfred Sneps-Sneppe "On Network Proximity in Web Applications"

In this paper, we discuss one approach for development and deployment of web sites (web pages) devoted to the description of objects (events) with a precisely delineated geographic scope. This article describes the usage of context-aware programming models for web development. In our paper, we propose mechanisms to create mobile web applications which content links to some predefined geographic area. The accuracy of such a binding allows us to distinguish individual areas within the same indoor space. Target areas for such development are applications for Smart Cities and retail.

Data Science Books

27 free Data Mining books

We would like one more: Statistics Done Wrong is a guide to the most popular statistical errors and slip-ups committed by scientists every day, in the lab and in peer-reviewed journals. Many of the errors are prevalent in vast swaths of the published literature, casting doubt on the findings of thousands of papers. Statistics Done Wrong assumes no prior knowledge of statistics, so you can read it before your first statistics course or after thirty years of scientific practice.

Geo-location for Telecom Operators

Our new paper: Dmitry Namiot, Manfred Sneps-Sneppe "On Geo Location Services for Telecom Operators"

This paper presents location based service for telecom providers. Most of the location-based services in the mobile networks are introduced and deployed by Internet companies. It leaves for telecom just the role of the data channel. Telecom providers should use their competitive advantages and offer own solutions. In this paper, we discuss the sharing location information via geo-messages. Geo messages let mobile users share location information as signatures to the standard messages (e.g., email, SMS). Rather than let some service constantly monitor (poll) the user location (as the most standalone services do) or share location info within any social circle (social network check-in, etc.) The Geo Messages approach lets users share location data on the peer to peer basis. Users can share own location info with any existing messaging systems. And messaging (e.g., SMS) is the traditional service for telecom.
